Travel and photography just seem to go together somehow… I’ve met many whose wanderlust has ignited a passion for photography as they try to capture the places and people they encounter on their travels, and a multitude of photography enthusiasts that have become avid travellers while seeking ever more interesting subjects for their pictures.
So why is it that travel and photography compliment each other so well?
They are both about seeing
Travel is about seeing new and interesting places, and photography is about really seeing. When we first visit a destination our ability to see is increased. We notice everything because it is new and shiny and different. The clothes that a local just threw on that morning become a statement of culture for the traveller/photographer – an interesting aspect that simply must be captured. The early morning light that would have normally have done nothing more than encouraged us to raise our heads from the pillow and reach for the coffee becomes the must-have backdrop to a spectacular mountain scene…
With any luck we can maintain some of this enhanced way of viewing the world when we return from our travels, and our old familiar environment becomes more interesting to us. We have increased our ability to notice the world around us, even the mundane that we are so used to.
They are both about appreciating our world
To travel is to love the world and its people, heading off to far-flung destinations simply to experience and enjoy our planet. Photography (not the selfie-stick kind!) takes this a step further in an attempt to bring home something of the way the place looked and felt to us, and to share it with others.
They both give us a sense we have really lived our lives
To travel is to really live. When we are on our deathbeds we never regret all the times we ventured out to see and do new things, to experience new places. Photography has a similar effect. Not only will we have paid more attention to our lives, but we will have a multitude of memory provoking images to prove it. We’ll have followed as photography led us to new places and people, and to look more closely at the familiar.
They both provide great bragging rights!
We cannot deny that we take great pleasure in telling people that we have just returned from a fantastic adventure somewhere distant and exotic, and we equally can’t deny the glow of pride when those Facebook likes come flooding in from a newly posted photo!
