Seek out the fabulous Musk Oxen in the Norwegian wilderness where the scenery is just as spectacular as these magnificent beasts, with waterfalls, quaint towns and stunning icy vistas.
Our photography adventure begins in Trondheim at Trondheim airport where you’ll meet your photography leader and the rest of the group and drive to Kongsvold Fjellstue.
Accommodation: Kongsvold Fjellstue
We’ll don our snowshoes and head out to where the Musk Oxen are. This can mean a walk of anything from 30 minutes to a 2-3 hours (1.5 km to 10 km), but the good news is that the further away these fabulous creatures are, the more of the stunning scenery we’ll get to walk through. We’ll also have a dog sled with us to help with carrying our gear. Along the way we are likely to see reindeer and mountain grouse and we time our walk to make use of the afternoon light, taking as much time as we require to get great shots of the oxen.
Accommodation: Kongsvold Fjellstue
This morning we will walk for 1.5km to the stunning Snohetta Viewpoint where we’ll photograph a spectacular sunrise over the mountains. We’ll also enjoy our packed breakfast at the top before moving on to Kongsvoldfossen where we’ll capture a beautiful frozen waterfall. Leaving the waterfall we drive for around 2.5 hours to the quaint town of Roros where we’ll be for some last light and sunset shots.
Accommodation: Vertshuset Roros
There’s more time to explore the charming town of Roros this morning, and the option to take a husky sled trip out in to the nearby countryside before returning to Trondheim airport.
Our photography holidays and tours are designed to maximise the chances of getting great images by visiting photogenic sites at times that are good for photographing them. This generally means trying to avoid crowds and being out when the light is best, just after sunrise, and again in the late afternoon. Occasionally we’ll stay out after sunset or make use of clear night skies. The middle of the day is often reserved for lunch, free time, travelling, downloading images and relaxing. We try to make the most of each area we visit so there may a lot of distance covered and sometimes days can be long. Please read the itineraries carefully to get an idea of driving times and any particularly demanding days.
Our holidays are planned for dates when the weather is expected to be suitable for photography; however, with an ever more unpredictable climate there is always the possibility that we’ll experience poor conditions. In this case we’ll give what advice we can to help you get good results from your photography, and we may make changes to the tour to try to make the best of the situation.
UK citizens should refer to the FCO advice on entry requirements here.
All other nationalities should consult their local embassy or consulate.
The joining time is 21:30 at Trondheim airport, your photography leader will meet you there.
This tour starts and ends at Trondheim airport so no transfers are required.
It is condition of booking that you are covered by adequate travel insurance. If you are bringing expensive photography equipment we recommend that this is insured too.
The following photography equipment is recommended:
• DSLR or mirrorless camera
• Wide angle lens
• Mid range zoom
• Telephoto lens with effective focal length of 300mm or greater
• ND filters
• Remote shutter release
• Sufficient memory cards and storage devices
You’ll need to wrap up warm against the cold using layers. We recommend a wool or synthetic base layer, a warm mid layer ideally made of fleecy material, and a warm down or synthetic out layer. Two pairs of socks are best and at least one should be thick, and a woollen hat to keep your head warm. Fairly rigid hiking boots should also be worn, and you’ll need thick gloves and sunglasses. Also bring a water bottle to keep you hydrated while walking.
Rooming is based on a twin share basis. If 2 people book together, they will automatically be roomed together. Those travelling alone will be sharing with another single traveller of the same sex unless a single room has been booked. If you desire privacy, are a light sleeper or a loud snorer then we’d recommend you book a single room.
All accommodation is on bed and breakfast basis and two lunches and a dinner are also included. For dinner on day 3 we’d recommend that you allow around £20 – £25 and around £5 – £10 a day for drinks.
Dog sled trip (day 4) – £155
